10.6.2009 (Tuesday): Finished last 10 minutes of The Crucible movie (Act II). Act III, pgs. 83-101. HW: Read Act III from pgs. 101-138. Make AT LEAST 25 interactions with the text (quesitons, comments, inferences, connections, etc.)

 

10.5.2009 (Monday): Read the deleted scene from Act II between Abigail and Proctor. Act II of The Crucible movie. Compared and contrasted events from the movie with events from the play. 9.25.2009 (Friday): Quiz #2. Finished Act I. Students took notes on ekphrastic poetry and created poems to images of this time period. Select poems were shared with the class.See presentation for details.

 

9.23.2009 (Wednesday): Act I. See presentation for details. Homework: Read "The Devil and Tom Walker" on pgs. 228-239. Do "Writing Lesson" ONLY on pg. 241.

9.21.2009 (Monday): Students received their "Fix-Up" strategies cheat sheet, as well as an iMovie bootcamp worksheet. Students then received grammar practice for this week's upcoming grammar. Students then were assigned roles in "The Crucible," our new unit for the next 6 weeks. "Crucible" books were passed out. "The Scarlet Letter" books were passed out as well as an extra-credit/extension assignment. If time remained, students began to read the Introduction. Homework: Read the "Act I" in "The Crucible" pgs. 3-20. Keep a list of questions, connections, inferences, and comments you had while reading. Minimum 25 interactions with the text! Due Tuesday.

9.18.2009 (Friday): Students concluded grammar notes from Wednesday. Students discussed "Of Plymouth Plantation" in small groups. Students also took notes on Puritans and their beliefs, focusing on the tangibility of God and Satan. Students then read "Huswifery" on pg. 82 with particular focus on the extended metaphor of God. Students then concluded their day by reading and discussing "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by doing a visualization drawing. 

 

9.16.2009 (Wednesday): Early Release Day. Students practiced concrete and abstract nouns, pronouns and antecedents, and action and linking verbs on the Smartboard. Homework: Read "Of Plymouth Plantation" on pgs. 58-65. Do "Writing Lesson: Speaker Introduction" on pg. 67.

 

9.15.2009 (Tuesday): Graded papers were returned and explained today. Students read "A journey through Texas" on pgs. 48-51 and performed written conversations during reading. Homework: Grammar notebook, pgs. 5 and 6 (action and linking verbs).

 

9.14.2009 (Monday): Mr. Hampton discussed the final product of the iMovie projects from last week. Students took notes on Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas and the fate of the modern day Native American and comtemplated the phrase, "History is written by the victor." Students then read "Museum Indians" in their textbook on pgs. 34-39. Homework: "Museum Indians" is written by the point of view of the daughter. Your assignment is to re-do the story into a journal entry from the mother's point of view in the story. Use details from the story to support your journal entry. BRING YOUR TEXTBOOK TOMORROW!

9.11.2009 (Friday): Quiz. Students worked with the Apple laptops today, learning how to create movies in iMovie. Students were then assigned their first project of the year: make a 1-2 minute video comparing and contrasting two of the creation stories. Pep-Rally was the last 30 minutes of class.

 

9.9.2009 (Wednesday): Students started to talk about Native American cultures through creation stories. Students read the account of biblical creation in Genesis 1-3. Students then read "The Earth on a Turtle's Back" on pgs. 20-23, paying close attention to how creation happened, the role of nature, and the birth of evil. Students then read "When Grizzles Walked Upright" on pgs. 24-26, while paying close attention to the above themes. Homework: Read "The Navajo Origin Legend" on pgs. 27-28. 1 page response paper comparing and contrasting the three creation stories.

 

9.8.2009 (Tuesday): Demand Writing #1. Homework: Grammar Notebook, pgs 3-4 (Pronouns and Antecedents).

9.4.2009 (Friday): Bathroom bookmark passes were handed out. See Mr. Hampton to receive yours if you were absent. Mr. Hampton went over some of the components of the Honors class, including the 6-trait writing rubric, plagiarism, essay tests, and Reader Response theory vs. New Criticism. A diagnostic essay was assigned and completed in class to see where students currently score on the 6-trait writing rubric. Homework: Bring in your textbook to class on Tuesday.

 

9.2.2009 (Wednesday): Students were shown how to calculate how fast they read and how long reading assignments will take. Students continued their notes on reading strategies from the previous day and used a short story from their textbook ("Boys and Girls") to practice the reading strategies. See presentation for details. Homework: Grammar Notebook, pages 1-2. Due Friday.

 

9.1.2009 (Tuesday): Mr. Hampton outlined the keys for success in his class and later in life. Mr. Hampton established a reason for setting a purpose for reading and modeled selected strategies. The stories used were "The House" and "What Happeneed During the Ice Storm." See presentation for details. Homework: Reader's Notebook, pg. 8-11, "Iroquios Constitution." Mark the text with questions, connections, and inferences. Turn in pages 9-11 on Wednesday.

 

8.31.2009 (Monday): Materials were checked by Mr. Hampton today. Students were shown how to organize their 3-ring binders and organize their notes. Make up buddies and rubrics worksheets were passed out and explained. See presentation for more details.

8.28.2009 (Friday): Students received their textbooks today and worked through a textbook preview discussion. If time remained, students were shown this website and how to access its features, as well as their second extra credit opportunity. Reminder: all required materials are due next Monday, 8.31.2009.

 

8.26.2009 (Wednesday): Introduction to black/white slides. Students were exposed to 3 moral dilemmas, which had to be answered before the end of class. See presentation for details.

 

8.25.2009 (Tuesday): Quiz. Students were assigned seating charts. The class spent the rest of the day reviewing over slides about Mr. Hampton's Life. See presentation for more details.

 

8.24.2009 (Monday): Welcome to English III Honors! Students reviewed over the syllabus and received a classroom tour. Homework: All required materials are due by next Monday, August 31.
