10.21.2009 (Wednesday): Review narrative vs. emotive poetry. Students read the "Oranges" poem from the Mastering FCAT. HW: Write an emotive poem on any emotion. Must be at least 1/2 page.

 

10.20.2009 (Tuesday): Notes: Introduction to poetry and poetry terms. Students practiced unjumbling a poem. Correct answers received a free chair pass. See presentation for details. HW: Write a narrative poem that tells a story on any subject of your choosing. Must be at least 1/2 page.

10.7.2009 (Wendesday): Notes on the structure of fairy tales. Read "Hansel and Gretel." Click here for a copy of the story. Background and pre-planning for the Fairy Tale Project. HW: Read "Ashputtle" on pgs. 1138-1144. Choose two (2) of the following: 1) discuss the plot of the story 2) discuss the characters in the story according to Propp 3) discuss significant numbers in the text 4) discuss the moral of the story. 10.5.2009 (Monday): Students practiced today with organizational patterns, including "flashback." Remaining class time was spent filling out PSAT Bubble sheets for next week's PSAT.

Students took notes on irony and practiced recognizing irony by watching a few clips from Monty Python and the Holy Grail while doing short response questions. Students ended the day by reading, "Where have you gone, Charmin' Billy?" in the Holt textbook.

 

9.30.2009 (Wednesday): Students took notes on main idea. Students practiced recognizing main idea by listening to Bob Maryey's "Three Little Birds." Students then practiced with an FCAT passage on recognizing main idea. See presentation for details.  Homework: Grammar 9/10.

 

9.29.2009 (Tuesday): Students took notes on grammar--pronouns. Students reviewed over author's purpose notes from last week. Students then read "Like the Sun" on pgs. 190-194 and answered author's purpose questions. See presentation for details. Homework: Grammar 7/8.

9.24.2009/9.25.2009 (Thursday/Friday): Quiz #2. Students took notes on author's purpose, bias, and propaganda. Students then watched select infomercials that showcased different types of persuasive devices. Students concluded the day by reading Jane Goodall's "I Acknowledge Mine," which concerns animal testing for human benefit. See presentation for details and Mr. Hampton for a copy of the story. Clips: Nostalgia, Scare Tactic, Testimonial, Plainfolks, Bandwagon.

 

9.23.2009 (Wednesday): Notes on cause and effect. Students revisited a previous story, "Kokopelli's Flute," found on pages 296-297. Students answered question 4 for practice. Students then read "How to Fight Monsters" and answered specific cause and effect questions. See Mr. Hampton for a copy of the story. See presentation for details. Homework: "Contents of a Dead Man's Pocket" on pgs. 118-134. Answer "Cause and Effect" questions on the side--there are 8 total.

 

9.22.2009 (Tuesday): FCA #1 Review.

 

9.21.2009 (Monday): Students reviewed over their class results from FCA #1. Worksheets on Fix-Up Strategies were passed out. Students reviewed over compare and contrast from the week before. Students read, discussed, and answered questions on "The Race" and "Working Together," which is found on pages 618-620. See presentation for details. Homework: Grammar notebook, pgs. 5/6. Due Tuesday.

9.17.2009/9.18.2009 (Thursday/Friday): Students reviewed over how to answer short and extended responses. Notes were taken on compare and contrasting with particular focus on the Venn diagram. Clips of "Vantage Point" were shown with a writing excersise. Students then read "Flipped" and "Diving Under" and answered compare and contrast questions after reading. See Mr. Hampton for a copy of the story. See presentation for details. Homework: Grammar Notebook, pgs. 3 and 4. Due on Monday.

 

9.16.2009 (Wednesday): Early Release Day. Students reviewed over yesterday's FCA. Students also worked on concrete, abstract, proper, and common nouns in class. There is no presentation.

 

9.15.2009 (Tuesday): FCA #1. There is no presentation today. See Mr. Hampton to make up your test.

 

9.14.2009 (Monday): Students reviewed notes on plot, setting, and characterization. Students took notes on fiction. Mr. Hampton modeled how to answer plot, setting, and characterization questions on the FCA/FCAT with "Kokopelli's Flute" on pgs. 296-297 in the Prentice Hall textbook. Graded papers were returned and explained. Please place returned papers in Section 3 of your binder. See presentation for details. Homework: Read "Monkey's Paw" on pgs. 33-42. Write a 2-3 sentence description for each of the following: conflict, resolution, and setting. Due tomorrow. BRING A PENCIL TOMORROW!

9.10.2009/9.11.2009 (Thursday/Friday): Quiz. Students took notes on Characterization. Students read "Two Kinds" from the Holt textbook. Students then re-cast part of the story into a journal entry. See presentation for details; see Mr. Hampton for a copy of the story.

 

9.9.2009 (Wednesday): Students reviewed over Freytag's Triangle notes from last week. Students then read, "There Will Come Soft Rains" in their Prentice Hall textbooks on pgs. 284-292. Students continued to practice the 6 "good" reader strategies while reading the text. See presentation for details. Homework: Prentice Hall textbook, "There Will Come Soft Rains," Finish making a 2-3 sentence description for exposition, conflict, and resolution.  

 

9.8.2009 (Tuesday): Demand Writing #1. Homework: Grammar Book, pg. 1-2 (Nouns)

9.3.2009/9.4.2009 (Thursday/Friday): Change of plans folks! There is no benchmark exam. Bathroom bookmark passes were handed out. Students took notes Freytag's Triangle. Clips were shown from Labyrinth, The Freak, and No Time For Nuts. Students practiced plot diagraming in the class set of textbooks using "What Happened During the Ice Storm."

 

9.2.2009 (Wednesday): Students were shown how to calculate how fast they read and how long reading assignments will take. Students continued their notes on reading strategies from the previous day and used a short story from their textbook ("Boys and Girls") to practice the reading strategies. See presentation for details. Homework: Read “Magdalena Looking” in your Readers Notebook on pages 4-13. Mark pages 5 and 6 with connections/questions/inferences. Tear out pg. 5/6 and turn in on block day.

 

9.1.2009 (Tuesday): Mr. Hampton outlined the keys for success in his class and on the FCAT. Mr. Hampton established a reason for setting a purpose for reading and modeled selected strategies. The stories used were "The House" and "What Happeneed During the Ice Storm." See presentation for details.

 

8.31.2009 (Monday): Materials were checked by Mr. Hampton today. Students were shown how to organize their 3-ring binders and organize their notes. Make up buddies and rubrics worksheets were passed out and explained. See presentation for more details.

8.27.2009/8.28.2009 (Thursday/Friday): Students received their textbooks today and worked through a textbook preview discussion. If time remained, students were shown this website and how to access its features, as well as their second extra credit opportunity. Reminder: all required materials are due next Monday, 8.31.2009.

 

8.26.2009 (Wednesday): Introduction to black/white slides. Students were exposed to 3 moral dilemmas, which had to be answered before the end of class. See presentation for details.

 

8.25.2009 (Tuesday): QUIZ #1 WAS TODAY. Students were assigned seating charts. The class spent the rest of the day reviewing over slides about Mr. Hampton's Life. See presentation for more details.

 

8.24.2009 (Monday): Welcome to English II! Students reviewed over the syllabus and received a classroom tour. Homework: All required materials are due by next Monday, August 31.
