Students learned about the NMHS Reading Race when Ms. Carr came in to speak for the first 10 minutes of every class. After her presentation, students continued their notes from the previous day about reading strategies, with focus being shifted to the UNRAAVEL strategy for FCAT testing. Pop Quiz #3. Students continued watching elements of Freytag's triangle--specifically, "The Freak," "No time for nuts," and the short story, "What Happened During the Ice Storm." DUE TO COPYRIGHT VIOLATION, I CANNOT POST THE VIDEO CLIPS. PLEASE COME AND SEE ME BEFORE SCHOOL TO WATCH IT. The worksheet was then collected. Students then took notes on characterization--specifically indirect vs. direct, and stock characters. You can click here for the Powerpoint. Students then watched a brief clip from "Breakfast Club." Students then read the short story, "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan highlighting some major chararizations. Our day ending with the "Colts Engaged in Reading" challenge by reading our book for this semester, "Necessary Roughness."

Seating charts for classes. Holt reader books were also passed out. You are to bring the Holt Reader to class EVERYDAY, just like your composition notebook. Classes began by finishing reviewing over point of view and finishing "Two Kinds." CLICK HERE FOR THE POWERPOINT. After finishing the short story, students were given 30 minutes to re-write "Two Kinds" from the mother's point of view. Format is to be 4 journal entries, modeled after the 4 elements of Freytag. After handing this in, we reviewed over FCA #1 with heavy emphasis on using DETAILS from the text. The last 5 minutes of class, we handed back graded papers.

Warm up in composition notebook. Click here for the notes. Students then then exposed to ekphrastic poetry, which is poetry written in response to a visual stimulus, such as a sculpture or painting. Students were exposed to 3 paintings and asked to write a poem to them--each created poem took no less than 7 minutes.

After each 7 minute block of time, students were given approximately 5 minutes to share their poems with the class if they wished. After ekphrastic poetry came to an end, students then wrote another warm up in their notebook. Students then read "The Lottery" by Shirly Jackson as part of Mr. Hampton's scary story unit during Halloween.

Students began the day by taking notes on our new class novel, Johnny Got His Gun, which we will be reading for the next 3-4 weeks and then watching the movie adaptation in early December. After taking notes on Trumbo, World War I, flashback, and unreliable narrator, we began our lesson by listening to Metallica's "One," which is a loosely based adaptation of Johnny Got His Gun. Click here to download the song. After listening to the song and discussing the lyrics, the music video for "One" was shown and discussed--since Metallica decided to buy the rights to the original film. After the song, we assigned book numbers for each student and began reading the novel.
